WAR
Fierce lightnings flash through every riven cloud ; Clear through the sultry airs from pole to pole The thundenngs of war and slaughter roll, j While o cr our heads their warning echoes crowd. ! With demon shouts upri-e the Eastern proud ; j The shepherd spurns his crook, the priest his J stole— n, blindly forward rush, their only«goal To shed a foeman's blood, prepare his shroud. The fiends of hell are loose, and, armed with fire, Throng where but late the cottage smoke ' npcurled In peaceful whorls. 'Mid desolation dire, Their shrieking victims into night are hurled. I We gaze and shudder, and with deep desire Yearn for a reign of peace o'er all the world. St. Clair, April 1597. -G. Palmer.
