Notes from Wakatipu.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Arrowtown, December s.— The cleaning up of the Tipperary battery, Macetown, on the S7th Ult. yielded 740z of smelted gold from £92 tons of Btone. This gives about sdwt to the ton, and is a payable result. Rich stone is known to lis underfoot, and the manager, Mr W. J. Stanford, is losing no time in making this stone available, the work being pushed on with all possible speed, but as shaft or winze is necessary and a level has to be driven it will be a few weeks before Btone in any quantity can be raised from that portion of the mine lying below the water level of the main adit. In the meantime crushing the Btone from Ihe present stopes will continue, as with the existing facilities it yields a surplus over working expenses. The Glenrock Company had a cleaning up after putting through 160 tons of stone, which yielded 430z of smelted gold, or rather better than Bdw t per ton. which is a dividend-yielding average if lhe Btone can be treated iv quantity. The stone in the Glenrock mine is alco improving in quantity as it is sunk upon, giving promiee of a better future. Dredging claims have been pegged out and , applied for in the Cardrona valley from .the mouth of Branch Creek down stream. It has long been known that gold exists in highly paying quantities in this portion of the Cardrona valley, an d>>it is rather surprising that it has escaped syndicating attentions for so long a time. The _' aggregate 'area applied for is about 100 acres — a tolerable field for activity. Good .'news Continues to'come to hand from the Achilles, and very good stone is being raised from several parts of the mine.' . It is reported that the trial crashing from the' Garibaldi mine, Macetown, of some 13 tons of stone went about !odwt per ton. This is a very satisfactory return considering the great body of the stone, which averages 10ft in width, previous explorations exposing at least 30,000 tons. The returns for the past month from the Achilles are 20oz of smelted gold, the battery having been kept going only partially, and the current month will likely show a decided improvement upon above.
