ROUGH RIDGE.
July 6.— Winter is gradually creep'ng on, and, with the exception of the last few> days, the weather has been quite as good as the gmater part of last summer. Several blight showers of snow have fallen since lost Monday, but it has all disappeared from the lowlands, and only the mountains retain their wintry mantle.
Coal.— Mr Charles Beck, propiietor of the Idaburn coalpit, has lately secured one of Mr R, Cockerell's new pumps, and ou Thursday last a sonsiderable number of those interested in mining
and pumping gear were present at the trial run. The pump, which was on exhibition at the workshop of Mr J. Anderson, engineer, Stafford street, Dunedin, haa already been described in the columns of both the Daily Times and the Witness. It throws a considerable quantity of water a vertical height of 28ft with the greatest ease, about a half-horse power only being required to work it. The pump baa fully realised all thatwas expected of ir, aud the designer should find a keen demand for It, as it is eminently suitable for. working low-lying flits or river beds or for throw ing water to any height on hills where no water is obtainable above for sluicing with a minimum of power.
