WAIPORT.
Junb29.— The- ruining industry id looking promising. The water has been pumped out t of the Canton mine, which has been standing idle so long. A few men are now getting out quartz, ' and crushing has been started. Ihe hydraulic machinery has been shifted on to Mr Cotton's, ground. It is under the management of Mr Hilgendorf, who has about ISTmsn working altogether. This ground is expected to pay handsomely, but there has been no washing up as yet. .We are in good hopes of a favourable result Ball.— A ball was held in Mr Cotton's bars, whioh was nicely decorated for the occasion, ftbout 30 couples gathered together,' and a most enjoyable night was spent. ~ The ball was given by Mr Cotton in commemoration of opening the Hew claim. An Aged Lady.— Mr and Mrs Cotton and Mr ' and Mrs Hendry have been on a visit to Evans Flat to see Mrs Hunt, one of our, old neighbours, who is now 93 years of age. The aged lady was in this district 85 years ago. , She will be remembered by many of tho old miners. She is .quite nimble, and is in good spirits. She can'seeito' read and knit without spectacles.. Indeed, she expects to come up to Waipori in the summer. .
