TUTURAU.

June 29.— During the 'pasfr, week the weather has been dry. with cold easterly winds. The farmers are taking advantage of the dry weather to get on with their ploughing. Mutual Improvement —Tbe local Mutual Improvement Society held its second meeting on the 22nd. Owing to a misunderstanding no paper was forthcoming, but a question box, together with some e crags and recitations, filled up the time very pleasantly. There are now over 40 members on the roll of the society. Mataura Ploughing Match. —This match was held in Mr J. Humphries' s paddock on the 24th inst. In spite of the cold wind blowing, the attendance vras very fair. The en trios oho wed a

satisfactory increase on those of last year, no leßß f than 20 ploughs of one sort or another being on the field. The Southland F. I. and E. Company exhibibited a "colonial" combined grain and turnip drill,; which attracted much attention ; also a set of all-steel diec harrows and a Mote's patent "knock-out" cultivator. The MosseyHarris Company exhibited their well-known gram drill and cultivator. As lait year, Mr D. Dickie, ' of this district, took first in the Champion Class, • thus winning Messrs Gilt's drain plough valued at 12gs. He also took all the specials in his closi I excepting one. Mr Dickie's work was straight ■ and even from start to finish. Mr W. Mortimer, ' of Riveredale, who was placed second, pushed I him very hard for supremacy, doing some admirable work. Musical.— l hearthat a few of the members of the MtttHura Brass Band called on several residents of the district on Satin-day night last, playing a few selections at each house visited.
