MAHENO.
June B.— We have had a long spell of dry weather, with a" touch of frost, which nas enabled threshing to be completed, though at a rather later period than usual, on account of so much rain at the commencement of the Reason: The chaffcutters are now taking up the running. A. large quantity of straw is also being pressed and sent to market We had a good fall of rain on Saturday night and Sunday, the 6th and 7th taut., and the hills in the back country have got their winter coat, so that we must be prepared tor what we get in the shape of weather Local Hall. A large number of residents turned up to the election of a Hall Committee for the ensuing year. After the secretary of the r«tiring committee had read the report of the year's proceedings, and the report of last year's annual meeting had been read and confirmed, the-com-mittee retired, and Mr R. Thomson was appointed chairman of the meeting. Before asking, for nominations he said the position of affairs reflected great credit on the retiring committee for their arduous labours, and the judicious manner in which they had expended the revenue. The hall now looked quite a credit to the place; and certainly so to the «•« amlttee/ Nominations were then 'taken, when the retiring, committee— • Messrs W. Norman, D. Clark, EL A. Andrewa. R. Turnbull, and 8. Shacklock— wer« re-elected without opposition. A Vote of thanks to the chairman cloied the meeting. Football —Footballing is quite the rage at present. The Kakanui and Maheno £choolboyi met at Maheno< to teat their skill with th« leather, Mahtao winning, by 28' to 3. Tho Kaka-
nni and Maheno team* also met on Thursday last at Maheno, the- match being a very even one, neither side scoring until within two minutes of the'time, when through thoughtlessness, Eakanui was able to make a forco down, Maheno actually having the ball. The vbiting team were entertained in the evening, a capital dinner having been provided by the local team. Entertainments. — The band and football club gave a concert on Friday last, the hall being packed, and a very good programme waa gone through, Mr R. Thomson being m the chair After the concert dancing was entered into with spirit, and kept- up till early morn. Muric was supplied by Messrs Bews (violin), Saville (aceor* dion), and Gray (piano), and Mr S. Shackleton. performed the duties of M.C. Mr W. Miln* catered.
