OTAGO SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.
The monthly meeting of the Otago School Commissioners, held on Tuesday, was attended by Messrs J. P. Maitlaud (chairman), J. Walker Biin, W. Dallas, A B*ldey, and J. Gre en Tbe New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company applied, on behalf of Mr D. Gillaudora, for telief on account of loss of stock— lt was resolved that the applicant be allowed occupation of runs 327 and 327 a together with certsiiu concessions ai compensation for loss sustained in consequence of the severity of last winter. The Secretary of the Education Board wrota notifying the appointment ot Mr James Green, MH.R, as their representative on th« School Couiiuissioners Board.
The tender of Hugh Russel for the purchase of section 5 of 36 and 37, block IV, Akatore district, at 35s per acre was accepted. The Clerk of tha Southland" County Council wrote applying for payment of subsidy of £335 voted by the commissioners in November last for road works, and forwarding the engineer's certificate for the expenditure of the sum of £52ft 12s 7d.— The payment of the subsidy was authorised. The Secretary of th« Otaki* Pumping Committee wrote asking for a subscription tpwaids the cost of pulsion wheel and engine, which had been erected for tbe purpose of pumping water from tbe drains into the river, which would relieve some of the commissioners' land in flood time. — Tt was resolved that the secretary request information as to whether the machinery erected wa3 vested in the newly conetituted drainage board.
Mr E. H. Aitlcen, lessee of section 7. block XIV, Wendon district, asked to be allowed to enolose school reserve section 8 in boundary fence of tection 7, or else to leaso it from year to year.— Referred to Mr M'Donald for a report. Mr J. L. M'Donald forwarded his usual monthly report. He reported on the sale of leases at Gore on the 17th iust, and suggested that stction 11, block XIV, Wendon, nhould be retained as home* stead for working run* 25 i8 and 193, and that section 13 of the same block be lot with the run ; also that in the event of the other sections at Otama, which were passed in at the sale, not being t»ken up within a given time the upsets be reduced and the Und offered for leatse by tender. He further suggested that as there was little demand for inferior or pastoral land at present the question of sur^ veying the block of 6000 acres on run 175n be deferred for at least a year ; and that the occupier of the run (if let) hwe the pasturage of it at trie same rate as the run.— lt was resolved that sections 11 and 1% block' XlV, Wendon, and section 2, block XIII, Wendon, be included in lot 1, henceforth to be known as Wendon run. Run 3 254b and 193, with valuation for improvements £351 9s 6d, to be offered at auction at lid per acre for 14 year*. Lot 2, henceforth to be known as Greenvalo Run, to be offered at an upset of Id per acre, with valuation of \£l4O 83 for improvements, for 14 years, the purchaser of the run to have the right to occupy the block of 6000 acres on the south of the run reserved for settlement at the same late as that paid for the run from date of sale to the 30th of April 1897, with right reserved to lessors to enter upon and survey the said block at any time. Sections 4 and 5 to be offered at Is per acre, with £5 valuation for improvements, and sections not taken up to be offered at an upset of 3d per acre. Mr H 'Don aid reported that be bad made reentry upon section 20, block IV, Wendonside, held by F. Gorkin, and that the latter surrendered the lease ; also that the section was leased at the sale on the 11th inst. to N. O'Harra at 3s 6d per acre, the amount of £52 64 received for valuation going to tbt>. credit of Gerkin's arrears. Mr M'Donald further recommended that if Mr Gerkin paid £13 2s 9d tbe commissioners should forgo tbe rent after the end of October last.— ! Approved. He forwarded a letter from Mrs R. O. Galliway renewing her application to surrender lease of section 53, block I, Waikaia, and suggested that the rent should be reduced to the ups»t of la 61

The meeting then adjourned till Wednesday, An adjourned meeting of the School Coinmfs* sionera was held on the 22nd and attended by Messrs J. P. Maitland (chairman), J. Green, M.H.R , J. Walker Bain, A. Baldey, and W. Dallas. The Southland agent (Mr J. L. M'Donald), w potted that Mr G. Stalte, lessee of sections 1 to & block V, South Lumadeu, was deeiroui to bavo these sections offered in one lot, and recommended that this be done. The agent also suggested that in all cases where land was subject to flooding with a strong current, as little cropping or disturbing of the soil as possible should be allowed." It was agreed to offer tho sections for sale as ad« veitised, and the suggestion as to not cropping portions of sections liable to flood, without the consent of the commisbioneis, was approved. The action of the Southland agent in inserting (with the sanction of Me3ara Bam and Baldey) a special condition in the lease of the small river irontagi: opposite section 9 and part of section 8, block X, Waikai*, providing that the lessee .was to lay it down in English gtass and was not to break it up without the written consent of the commis« Burners, was approved. -, '
