CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The above council met at Clinton onJMday ; present— Ors Mitchell (chairman), Johnston, Bradfleld, Dallas, Wallace, Cummiog, Rhodes, Robertson, and Hay. COTBEiPONDENCfi. The Mayor of Brunuerton wired on the 2tSth March that 66 men had been killed in the Brunner mine and 250 women and children thereby left destitute, and asking the council to aid them by opening subscription lists. The Mayor of Greymouth also wrote in connection with the same matter, intimating that subscription lists would close on the 30th April.— Councillors of the various ridings to take subsoription lists and make arrangements enabling those who bad not already subscribed to do so. Massrs A. Blair and James Chittook, Tapanui, . wrote stating that they had done some work for the county on Pomahaka bridge which they could not get paid for, and asking that they be paid the amount (10a 6d). — The council knew nothing of the matter. Scott, Port Molyneux, wrote stating that he had handed his leaie of the Port Moljneux reserve over to Mr Stewart, sol> ia order to have it cancelled and a new lease drawn out, and suggesting that several unnecessary clauses be omitted ; the land was only fit for grazing, and the lessee wanted a pretty free hand. — Received. Mr H. Sayera, Warepa, wrote asking that the road from his place to Wilkinson's>e made passable. — Referred to the engineer to attend to. The Secretary Benevolent Trustees wrete, stating that the trustee! were, allowing 5s a weak to a woman in Clinton ponding the receipt of information from the counoil, and asking for the council's report on several other oases where time had •expired. —Cr Rhodes 1 said he understood the woman referred to wai the wife of the informer in the Tapanui sly-grog oases. He was a strong, ablebodied man, and etsps should be taken to bring him to book, and make him support his wife and family.— Cr Robertson said the man was a~young able-bodied man, who was Wont to drive about tho country in buggies. An information should be laid against him, and he would move accordingly. —Cr Cumminq seconded. — Cr Rhodes said that the woman would want support in the meantime. — The Chairman said that the case was a most necessitous case just now. — Cr Dallas said the police could not take action against the husband, and suggested that she be allowed 5s a week, provided that she supported an action against her husband for maintenance. — Cr Johnston moved that 5s be recommended for a month, and all the circumstances explained to the trustees. — Carried.

Mr D. Clark, secretary Church Committee, Waipahi, wrote asking that a road be formed to the new Preibytorian Church, the road line being in two or three cases scarcely passable. He asked the council to allow the use of the grader, for which the settler* would supply the horsea, and also a grant of £6 for rotten cock

Ashmore, Owaka, wrote asking that something be done to the road leading to her place. — Left over till next meetiug. Mr D. K*ler, Owaka, wrote applying for leave to erect gate across road on section 8 at ju action of Kaler's road, in order to stop cattle wandering up and down the road. — R. quest granted. Mr R. Meikle, Wailepeka, wrote that ha wan agreeable to Mr Telford'g terms re road through Otanomorao property to his place, and a*kiog that the matter be arranged at once. — It was mentioned that this was a private road, and it was carried, on the motion of the Chairman, thab Mr Meikle and Mr Telf ord make their own arrangements, \. Mr G. C. Challis wrote saying that the road oulvert -was too small, and askiug thab the culvert be lowered to drain his property. — Cr Hay said the council had no right to make culverts to drain property. — Mr Ohallis to be allowed to lower the oulvert at his own expense. . Mr D. M'Gregor and 10 others ab Pdmahaka Downs wrote asking the oouneil to have the ford across the Poinahaka river at Section 4, block XI V, comple'ed, and the road continued np the river towards the Back creok. — Mr 13. Bark and five others from the same place a»ked the council to open up a new read to Upper Clydesv&le steamer landing, and pointing out) that the £200 or £300 already spent ou the River road would be wholly thrown away unless fcais new road were opened. The distance to Cljdevale would also be reduced from 12 or 14 miles to five or six miles.— On the motion of Cr Wallace the engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the expenditure, with a view to the Government being communicated with on the subject. — Carried.

MISCELLANEOUS

The engineer's monthly roporb was read and adopted. ' 1 The monthly pay-Aheefc, amounting to £352 16s 3d, was passed for payment. Cr Hat said that in a case in which tho council granted lefcva to erect a gute on the Cannibal Bay road at Owaka a slip panel bad been put across the road. - He moved that the party get notice to remove Iho g*te at once. — Carried. The minutes o£ a meeting of .ratepayers at Waiwera re closing road were reaa and adopted, and the clerk instructed to value the land witjh a view of it being sold. The Clerk reported that he had valued, the closed road at J. Taylor's at £3 an acra and that at Mr Mitchell's at 10* an acre. — Report adopted, and land to be cffeied to adjoining owners at prices named. Three applications were received for the appointment at Catiin's river, and Mr J. W. Waldie was appointed. Or Cumming moved, Cr Rhodes seconded— "That the engineer call for tenders for next meeting, for expenditure of balance of votes on Tolmie'e r*ad " Resolved — " That the cleik issue summonses agaiest all defaulting ratepayers after 15th May." Cr Robeetson moved, Cr Cummins seconded — " That tenders bo called for ditching on road between sections 4-2 and 43 and sections 63 and 64-, block 111. Glenkenich." Cr Rhodes moved, Cr Hat se couded— " That the engineer take steps to batten new bridges on Kuriwao." This was all the business.
