THE NEW HEBRIDES.
Sydney, September 23. It is rumoured that the French oonsula are soundiug the Australian Governments with the view of tbe annexation of the New Hebrides. Inquiries go to confirm the belief that Borne important changes are contemplated. The Premier states that he has received no Information on the subject from the Imperial authorities. He ib convinced that France will take no steps withont consulting England, and he is equally sure that KcgUnd will do nothing to disturb the status quo. Nothing has occurred to disturb the treaty between England and Franoe. Missionaries recently returned from the group say the opinion generally exists that a movement is on foot to secure French control of tho islands, and that considerable alarm exists among the English residents and traders. Tbe mis* sionaries fear that annexation will put an end to the Protestant missions.
