EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.

Th« quarterly returns of school attendance for the period ended 30th September, which have been compiled by the secretary to the Otago Education Board, show that there were 205 schools in operation in the district, employing 218 male and 281 "female -teachers, besides 22 teachera of sewing. The number of pupils on the school rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 22,161, and at the end of the quarter 22,478, comprising 11,713 l)oya and 10,763 girls The working average -for the •quarter was 10,037 boys and 91 20 girls, making a total of 19,147, being 189 less than that im the preceding quarter, and 883 more "than that for the correspond ing quarter of 1593. The strict average was 135 less than the working average — viz., 19,012, being a decrease of 181 from the strict average for the preceding .quarter, atd an increase of 1121 on that for the corresponding quarter of 1893.

The averege attendances at the city and subur ban schools were :— lCaikomi ,737, George street 697, Albany street 680, High street 626, Normal 624, Caverehom SSI, Macandrew road 522, Forbury 492, Arthur street 488, Union street 483, Morninßton 456, North-Eist Valley 445, Kensington 363, •lUvennbourne 208, Anderson Bay 113. Tbo averages at Oamaru were :— South School 405, Nor^h 401, Middle 370. At the District High Schools :— Port Chalmers 523 Palmereton 295, Tokomairiro 272, Lawrence 234, Balclutha 217.
