BENEVOLENT TRUSTEES.
At last work's aneetinff of the Benevolent Trustees, the out-door relief showed thatior the month of September the number of cases -was 446, representing 108 men, 358 -women, ana 967 children. The cost was £135 6s pqr -week. For the corresponding month last year the number of cases was 425, representing 165 men, 376 women, and 928 children : the cost being £126 8s 6d per week. The total number receiving relief was 1413, against 1353- fbr last year. In connection 'with an anonymous communication it was mentioned that with regard to a report that' certain children who were boarded out were' being illtreated, steps bad been taken to icquire about the matter, and it had been found that there wai no foundation in tbe report. It was also incorrect that the children did not attend school. The Chairman mentioned that the inspector had re•ported that there were some children who were - boarded outwbo'werenot being properly attended to, but they *wonld be looked hi ter. The weekly meeting of the Benevolent Itfstttution Trustees, held on Tuesday afternoon, was attended by Messrs 11. Chihholm (chairman), -H. Gourlcy, A. Solr-nion, and W. Ibaac Accounts amounting to £186 14s 4d were passed for pay- . ment.— Mr Wales submitted a sketch plan of proposed wards at the Caversbam, Asylum, consideration of whicb was deferred. The plans provide for 42 additional beds, a reading room (50ft by 18ft— to replace the oneTecently destroyed by fire), and several small rooms for special cases.— The committee of the Charitable . Aid", Board wrete forwarding a cheque for £500, being the ueual monthly instalment claimed by the trustees for maintenance. The trustees were informed that they had exceeded their monthly estimate by £I^7, and the estimate for the seven months of the current financial year by about £363. The board stated that as it had only made provision for the bare estimate, it would be . unable to pay demands should the claims of the institution for the remaining period of the current financial year exceed the estimate. The letter was received, and the trustees expressed -the opinion that if the Charitable Aid Board could' not provide the necessary funds out of their assessment this from the local bodies, they Xthe trustees) would have to overdraw their banking account and add their debit balance to next year's requisition. — Messrs Roberts, Chithohn, and Haynes were appointed a committee to act in connection with the proposed works atPelichet Bay.
