THE POPULATION OF THE COLONY.
The total estimated population of the colony (including Maoris) on the 13th of December last was 724,258. The males numbered 390,496, and females 333,762. The excess of births over deaths in the year 1893 was 11,420, and the total increase in population during the year was 21 822,
The estimated Chinese population on the 3lst of December 1893 (inoluded in the above) was 4044 persons, of whom 17 were females. During 1893 the European population of the coloDy increased at the rate of 3 36 per cent. The rate of increase in 1892 was 2 58 per cent and in 1891, 1-37 per cent. The birth rate for the colony per 1000 of the mean population (exclusive of Maoris) in 1893 was 2750, and the death rate 10-23, as against 2733 and 10-06 respectively in 1892. The estimated number of marriages of Europeans solemnised in 1893 was 4100, against 4002, the actual number solemnised in 1892. The rate for 1893 is estimated to be 6*20 per 1000 of the mean population. In 1892 the rate was 6 23 per 1000.
