NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING.

Wellington, February 12.

Major Sommerville, chairman of the New Zealand Rifle Association, arrived in Wellington to night, en route for Christchurch, to make final arrangements for the annual shooting competition, which opens at Hillsborough on Thursday, March 1. The fact of the Hinemoa not being available to convey northern representatives to Lyttelton and the want of Martini ammunition for practice will, the major thinks, affect the attendance at the meeting, but not seriously. The entries are coming in satisfactorily, and Major Sommerville estimates the attendance from the North Island at 150. Very few entries have been made from Australia, but it is understood a team will come from Tasmania. Major Sommerville will interview the Minister for Defence to-morrow, and will communicate with the Union Company with a view to a reduction in fares between Wellington and Lyttelton.

The Christchurch Press understands that the new system of scoring as adopted at Bisley will be used at the coming meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association. Instead of haviDg four discs oi different colours to mark the shots of various values on the target, one square black disc will ba used, and the shots will be signalled as follows -.—For an outer the disc will be placed upon the top left-hand corner ; for a magpie, upon the top right-hand corner ; for an inner, upon the lower left-hand corner, and for a bull's eye upon the lower right-hand corner. A ricochet will be signalled by holding the disc diagonally upon the centre of the target.
