WAIKAWA.

August 4.— Few incidents have occurred during the past month worthy of record. , The weather has been changeable— boisterous, wet, and cold, relieved at intervals by froat and pleasant sunny days. The shipments of timber during July exceeded the corresponding month of last year by several thousands. Messrs Jack and Co. despatched over 150,000 ft, and Messrs Thomson' and M'Colgan about 73,000 ft. The latter sawmill has recently changed hands at a good figure, Mr Findlay, of Dunedin, being the purchaser, and Mr Gillies is at present in Waikawa examining and taking over the plant. * Health Note.— Measles are prevalent throughout the whole district, and are virulent. They have visited nearly every dwelling within a radius of 40 miles, and in Wyndham only two houses escaped. ' Agricultural. —Ploughing mainly occupies our farmers. They can do little else ; indeed, so bad are the roads that last season's produce cannot be carted to port. , Political— The' Mataura seat will be keenly contested at the forthcoming election. I learn that three candidates will be in the field, but I shall acquaint your readers more definitely, on this point when I can do so authoritatively. . Bushman's Contest.— Much interest is evinced in a Bushman's Contest arranged to take place tin the 26th August in Waikawa township. Tasmanians, New Zealanders, and Victorians are to compete, and demonstrate ' tfteir relative skill with the axe and saw.
