August B.— What is generally voted one of the best entertainments ever held here, came off on Thursday last in the Athensam Hall. It was in aid of the Mutual Improvement Society funds, ' and an excellent programme was presented. -The performers included vocalists from Dunedin and / the best of our local musical people, a fact which ' had the effect of drawing a bumper house. The overture by-the orchestra was followed by Mr J.^ M. A. Mackie singing' "Harae cam' -our quid man"; Miss Olouston, " Barney O'Hea " ;-MrW. F. Young, "The admiral's broom "(vociferously encored): duet, "The lily and the rosev 1 ' by Misses Gillies and Crawford; Mr J. A. Mason, "" rendition, "The last muster"; Miss M'lntyre, "The better land"; Mr J. A. Mackie, "Nazareth" ; Misses Nimmo and Quin, pianoforte duet; Mr W. F. Young, "The laird o' Cockpen" ; Miss Gillies, ">Afton Water".; and Mr J. S. Thomson, comic song. This brought the first part of the entertainment to a clobc The second part included the names of Miss Harland, Mrs Hassal, Mrs Clegg, Mr Murdoch; and Mr Brown, in addition to those previously {mentioned, all of whom contributed their several" items in a very satisfactory and 'pleasing manner. Mr~W. F. Young " brought Itne entertainment to a close with the song " Father.O'Flynn," and it is hardly necessary to state that he had to submit to an encore. The committee of management are to be compli-, mented on [the manner in which the arrangements were carried out, . The proceeds amounted . to a little over £15, which will give a great lift to the society's funds after all expenses are 'paid. Local iNDUSTRY.-r-Mr John M'Farlane, 'of this town, is about to start a sawmill near his resij dence, and logs are now being hauled to the, proposed site. This industry should prove a«boon to the township, and it is hoped that Mr M'Farlane may be successful in his undertaking. ■ ' Cricket.— The annual meeting of the Cricket Club was held on Saturday night. The balance sheet was a v.cry satisfactory one. The election of officers having taken place, it was arranged that the opening match shall tike place on September 29, the natch to be Ladies v. Gentlemen, the latter to play left-handed. A conewt will take place in the evening, and a district match will be played next day. (Saturday). ,
