THE ATTITUDE OF THE SOUTHERN UNIONS.

A meeting of delegates from the unions of Canterbury, Otago, and Southland was held in the City Hotel laßt Saturday night. There were present—Messrs G. Harris aud T. R. Cresswell, Canterbury ; Metsrß W. D. Milne and J. B. Waters, Otago ; and Mr R. Galbraith, Southland. Mr Milne wa3 appointed chairman and Mr Creeswell secretary of the meeting. Mr Harris reported an interview with the secietary of the Souia Canterbury Union on the ZBfch July, and the secretary reported that the- delegates had met the committee of the Otago Union that evening. It was unanimously resolved—" That in the opinion of the delegates— (l) Entire harmony exists between the three unions ; (2) affiliation to the New Zealand Rugby Union would not be CDnducive to the best interests of football in the three unions ; (3) under the circumstances the Canterbury Rugby Union was justified in the stand it took with regard to the South Canterbury Rugby Union ; (4) it is not desirable that any match be played during this season by the three unions, or any of them, against any unions affiliated to the New Zealand Rugby Union; (5) no action should be taken by any of the three unions in the direction of interfering with interclub matches ; (6) owing to the short notice given by the New Zealand Rugby Union of their wish to play a match against a oombined team from the three unions, but owing more particularly to the state of feeling in football circles throughout the colony, it is not desirable that this match should be played; (7) next year the Canterbury, Otago, and Southland Unions should treat with the other unions of the colony so far as possible on the basis which existed prior to the preseßt Beason; (8) the formation of a South Island Union is unneceesary ; (9) no definita policy with regard to the New Zealand Ragby Union should in future be adopted by any one of the three unions without previous consultation with the other two ; (10) a copy of the minutes of this meeting, sigaed by the delegates present, be forwarded to the executive of each of the three unions." Chtustchubch, August 1. At a well attended meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union held to-night* all the resolutions carried at the conference of delegates from Obago, Canterbury, and Southland Rugby Unions, held at Dunedin on Saturday, were agreed to, the East Christohurch Club delegates alone dissenting.
