THE NEW ZEALAND UNION AND THE SOUTHERN UNIONS.

The following telegrams passed in the latter part of last week relative to the suggestion made in Wellington that the southern unions should send a team to Wellington to play the New Zealand Union team on their return, but as will be seen from the report of the conference hold in Dunedin on Saturday night, the proposal was rejected, as was indeed only to be expected after the insult offered to the south in Mr Hobon's offer to play fiEteen or eighteen representing them : —

F. Home, Otago Rugby Union, Dunedin.— Hoben was at me to-day about a match between combined South Island and the team now in Australia. Is there possibility of a match being arranged? It appears North Island Union would have match played in Wellington on, say, Saturday week.— Jasies Allen, Wellington, July 27.

James Allen, M.H.R., Wellington.— Your wire is first suggestion of the match mentioned. If Hoban wants match let him communicate with sister unions— Otago and Canterbury and Southland.—Fred. T. Home, hon. secretary. Dunedn, July 27.

Secretary Otago Rugby Union.— Referring your telegram to president Otago Union, New Zealand team willing jplay best Fifteen or Eighteen combined Otago, Canterbury, Southland, at Wellington on August 4th or 6th. Have, in accordance your wire, also telegraphed Canterbury, Southland. Await reply.— Hoben. Wellington, July 23.
