RECEPTION OF THE RETURNING FOOTBALLERS.

A public meeting was held at Wellington on Monday night to consider what steps should be taken to welcome the New Zealand Union football team on their return from Australia. The Mayor presided, and about 130 were present. A largo and influential committee, including several M.H.R's., was appointed to carry out the arrangements. It was decided to ask the unions affiliated to the New Zealand Union to subscribe towards presenting each member of the teim with a memento of the visit. Probably 15 of the team will be sent to Timatu to play a South Cauterbury team. Wellington, August 1.

A meeting of tho General Committee for the reception of the New Zealand representative football team was held at Parliament Buildings to-night. Mr George Fisher, M.H.R., president of the Wellington Rugby Union, was in the chair, and amongst those present were his Worship the Mayor, the Hon. Mr M'Cullough, M.L.C., Messrs F.j Lawry and T. Thompson (presidents of Auckland Clubs), James Allen (ex-president of Obago Rugby Union), A. B. G. Rhodes (president Canterbury Rugby Union), Bruce, Wilson, Harknes?, Hall-Jones, Guinness, M.H.R's., and several others. On the motion of Mr Bruce, it was resolved that the members of the Reception Committee meet the Wakatipu on arrival, and that the public be invited to do so aho. On the motion of Dr Newman,, it was resolved to ask his Excellency" the Governor to formally welcome the team on Friday morning at 10 o'clock. On the motion of Mr Bruce, secouded by Dr Newman, it was resolved to ask his Excellency if it would be convenient for him to preside at the proposed "social," and for the Premier to be aßked to occupy the vice-chair; or, should his Excellency ba unable to attend, tbe Premier will be asked to preside. The "social" was fixed to take place on Saturday evening, and a strong committee was formed to carry out all the arrangements.
