AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Taihoav

Auckland, July 11. White and Blue won the Piako Couraing Club's All-aged Stakes, Major being the runner-up. Mr J. Lennard informs me that he has taken up a nice colt by King Quail out of Highland Mary, who has been named The Barge. The filly which has been hand-reared by Mr Lennard is called Marjorie. She is by Penrose out of Marion's sister Miss Sly. Penrose was by Sledmere from Atlanta (dam of Hippomenea, Regal, &c ) This filly is well grown and as Btrong as a castle. Mr Lennard is very proud of her. Miss Sly visited M'Kinnon's Flintlock last The Auckland Racing Club has presented Mr John Kirkwood with a neat gold medal,*denoting that he is a life member of the club. This is for his many years of service to the Auckland Racing Club. George Wright took Leolanus up after a long and enforced spell. The horse has been in work, but has again shown symptoms of unsoundness, and it has been decided not to persevere with him. Brigadier, one of the handsomest and best sons of Musket, is to stand at Wellington Park this forthcoming season as well as the stallions Cuirassier, Castor, St. Leger, and Hotchkiss. Fred Steening tells me that Mangere is getting on splendidly, and is going as sound as a bell. I am glad for his owner's (Mr Walter Paul) sake. He is a genuine sport, and deserves a better share of luck. I understand that Castor will not be at the service of breeders next season, also that Carbine's sister (Lady Walmsley) missed to Tasman. Hard luck this. Misß Letty, by St. Lsger from Necklace, after a long Bpell, is to be placed again in training. This filly had an awful gruelling as a two-year-old, and as likely as not may never return to her proper form. There are terrible lamentations at the licking the footballers received in Sydney. None of the cognoscenti would .believe the cable. It read : " New South Wales defeated New Zealand 25 to 3." They all thought the little word "by" had been left out.
