RACING IN NEW ZEALAND

GISBORNE RACES.

WELLINGTON HUNT CLUB MEETING.

WELLINGTON WINTER MEETING. ' Saturday, July 10. The Winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was held at the Hutt course today. The weather was fine in ,the morning, but during the afternoon a light drizzling rain fell. The heavy rain of the last week had made the course a trifle holding, and it was cutting up badly towards the end of the day. Kapua, who was favourite for the Hurdles, turned turtle over the hurdle in front of the stand in doinga preliminary canter, and from the manner in which he fell it was feared he would break his neck, but he showed no outward sign of injury, yet he ran very * indifferently in the race. George Hope received a shaking, but not sufficient to deter him from riding in the Steeplechase. The- amount put through the machines was £3477 against £3806 last year. Although there were a good many spills during the day none of the riders were hurt ; but one or two of the horses— notably Parnell, of Auckland—got a nasty cutting about in the Steeplechase. The following were the results :— TRIAL STEEPLECHASE, Of 70sovs ; Becond horse Mteovs. Two miles. 60— Mr Russell's eh g Union Jack, by Liberal, 1010 ..-: (M'Cracken) 1 28— Mr Green's eh g Oaklands, 10,10 (Morris) 2 12-Mr A. Union Jack rushed to the front and soon placed a dozan lengths between the field and himself. Mutineer and Nanakia came to grief at the second fence and Rex ran off. Moonraker, Judas, and Liberty also met with mishaps. Union Jack continued to increase his lead. At the sod wall Oaklands baulked, but eventually got over, though he lost a lot of ground ; Flywheel was second, with Worth, who bluijdeied, opposite the stand. Then Oaklands set sail after the leaders, and though he passed the last-mentioned pair, could not set up to Union Jack, who won by four lengths ; Worth fourth. None of the riders were hurt. Time, 6min 2sec. Dividend, £5 19b. HURDLE HANDICAP, Of lOOsovs ; second horse ISaovs. One mile and three-quarters. 18-Mr J. On the fall of the flag Wanderer s colours were prominent, with Freelance on his quarters. The fatter, however, was immediately steadied, and Auroa and Langley the Devil joined the leader, Freelance whipping in. At tbe turn by the river Wanderer gave place to Unity and dropped well to the rear, the order then being Unity, Auroa, Langley the Devil, and Kapua. Viola II and Freelance were clean out of it. At the back Unity and Auroa drew away six lengths from the others, and came over the last hurdto close together, Unity having a slight advantage. 'Once in the straight Unity left Auroa,^ and won comfortably by four lengths, Langley an .indifferent third, Kapua fourth. Then followed Disturbance and Wanderer, with Freelance a bad last. Time, 3min 34sec. Dividend, £29 6s. HACK HURDLES HANDICAP, Of 30aovs ; second horse 530V8. One mile and a-half. Mr Prosser's Pumau, 10.3 (Seccombe) 1 Desdemona was second and Primus third. Empire ran round the double, and Cyrus refused, but eventually the latter was got over ; and Dromedary, Union Jack; and Otakeho comprised the whipping-in division. On entering the second round Victrix was still at the head of affairs, with Bide-a-Wee handy, and FlywhPdl and Chester well up; Waterbury; Gondolier, and Iroquois following. Victrix led over the water jump, with Flywheel and Iroquois a couple of lengths away. Chester fell at this jump, but was remounted and Continued in the race, but was not again prominent. Victrix was first over the sod wall, Bide-a-Wee second, Iroquois next. The latter struck the top of the jump and dislodged Powell, who made a gallant attempt to recover himself, but could not manage it, and the horse returned to the paddock. Parnell was fourth, with Gondolier and Waterbury next. In Ward's paddock Bide-a-Wee was beaten, and Parcell, too, had evidently had enough of it. Gondolier and Waterbury were tbe closest attendants to Victrix, who was a dozen lengths in front on taking the last jump. Waterbury then set out in hot pursuit, but Hope, havingbroken one stirrup leather early in the race, failed to get up to Victrix, who won by a couple of lengths ; Gondolier a fair third, the others pulling up.
