Diamond showed the way from a good start, but at half- distance was collared by Broker, on whom Buddicombe made a clever turn round a sharp corner. Reprieve fell at this spot and Loup Garou stumbled a few yards farther on, leaving Broker to win in a canter by a couple of lengths. Time, 2min 2£sec. Dividend, £1 9s. After going two furlongs Sweetbriar rushed through and went away at a great pace, the others changing positions several times but the Taieri mare always keeping in front till a quarter of a mile from home, where Derby closed on her. She at once collapsed, and Mariner being also done, the old son of Daniel O'Rourke was left to finish at his ease by three lengths ; Mariner, who made a last effort in the straight, nearly getting up to Mountain Maid. Ruthven's g m Sweetbriar, aged, 7.2 (Ruthven) t Also ran : 25 Polly 7.5 (Buddicombe). There was a lot of delay at the post, Polly and Rondinella being fractious. Polly eventually got a little the best of the start, but Rondinella soon joined her, and the latter led four furlongs from home, where the favourite was collared by Mountain Maid. The latter led into the straight, and won rather easily by a length and a-half. Sweetbriar; who had been three times disappointed in trying to squeeze up on the inside, making a dead heat of it with Rondinella for second place. Time, lmin 23i8ec. Dividend, £6 6s. SELLING RACE, Of 20sovs ; second horse 3sovs and third 2sovs from the stake. Nine stone up. One mile. 14— Mr G. Ruthven's g m Sweetbriar, by Daniel O'Rourke— Mrs Wilson (Ruthven) 1 37— Mr H. Rawcliffe's eh h Stonehenge (Young) 2 13— Mr S. Waddell's r m Polly (W. Buddicombe) 3 Also started : 44 Rangiora, 3 Fanny, 31 Le Roi, 2 Grosvenor, and 8 Garnita. Polly took the lead after a stride or two, and showed the way to Le Roi for a third of the distance, where Sweetbriar collared them. The latter soon gained a substantial advantage, and being kept going won by half a dozen lengths. Time, lmin 52sec. Dividend, £9 15s. The winner was bought in at £12.
