PORTOBELLO.
May 9.— The ordinary meeting of the Portobello Board Board was held on the 30th ult., the members present being Messrs Dickson, Seaton, Lewis, Cross, M'Taggart, Hinckly, and Anderson. In the absence of the chairman (Mr Macandrew), Mr Dickson was voted to the chair. Tenders were opened for the supply of 150 yds of bluestone metal for the main district road, opposite Mr Seaton's property, and the only tender— that of Mr J. P. M'Cartney— was accepted, the board thinking the price reasonable. Mr George Forsyth appeared before the board with reference to the notice he bad received to remove some stones now lying on
the road, the result of a slip from his land. Mr Forsyth offered the metal in question at od per yard, the board relieving him of the necessity of removing it. The board accepted the offer. A number of ratepayers asked the board to place their names on the voters roll, so as to enable them to vote at the late election of members. This the board declined, as they had no power to do so. Mr Moss wrote requesting the board to take action as to the sanitary condition of the district, as a result of which diphtheria had broken out in his family. Dr Cunningham, of Port Chalmers, also drew attention to the necessity of steps being taken to improve the sanitary condition of the district. After considering the matter, the board appointed Mr Porterfi eld sanitary inspector for the district. * Mr W. A. Wilson wrote complaining of the board making holes in the beach opposite his property, alleging that they acted as a trap to catch marine plants, which decomposed, causing a very disagreeable smell. He also complained of the board forming a road through his property, and said that when it was completed he would put a fence across it. Received. A petition was received from ratepayers living in Grant's Braes, requesting the board to effect some repairs to the roads in that township. The matter was ordered to stand over till next meeting. Mr Ross applied for permission to erect a floodgate on the creek at his property in Hooper's Inlet. The request was granted, subject to the approval of the inspector. Some settlers in Wickliff Bay asked the board to form about seven chains of road along Mr H. Duckmanton's property, so as to connect the present roads with it, as tli is piece is impassable for foot traffic at high water. It was decided to call for tenders for the work, to be in at next meeting. Annual Road Board Meeting.— The annual meeting of the Portobello Road Board was helc. on the 7th inst., the members present being Messrs Macandrew (in the chair), Dickson, Seaton, Cross, Wilson, Hinckl* , Cassels, Anderson, and M'Taggart. A rough balance sheet was submitted, but it was resolved to defer consideration of it until it should be duly certified to by the Auditor-general. Mr Macandrew having vacated the chair, Mr William Dickson was unanimously elected chairman for the ensuing year. The ordinary business adjourned from previous monthly meeting was then considered. In reference to the Anderson's Bay Bridge a good deal of dissatisfaction was expressed as to the delay of the company in not fulfilling the compact entered into to complete the work. It was resolved that unless the work be completed on or before the 27th inst. the board's solicitors should be consulted.
