RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASES. Monday. July 14.

The Winter meeting of the W.R.C., postponed from Saturday, came off to-day. The weather .cleared up, splendidly, but in the latter part of the afternoon the' wind changed to the south and blew very cold. The course, as was expected after tho recent heavy rains, was a little -holding. Two totalizators put through £3443, being an inorease of £185 on the Winter meeting last year. No large dividends were paid, £5 5s on Asper in the Trial Steeplechase being the best. Orient's win in the Steeplechase, was very popular, and the' owner and rider was cheered on the horse returning to scale. Orient is some 16 years old, but fenced in quite his old style, and showed that he still retains a fair amount of pace. Darnley wasthofavourifce, and from 'a straggling start waa soon in front ; but the first fence was fatal to him— Hickey escaping with a shaking. Gladius fell, refusing the double in front of the staud, and was clean out of it. Waipipi then assumed the lead, which he maintained the second time rouud, followed closely by Orient and Gasparini, the Doctor being a distance away, with Sir Maurice and The Donkey whipping in. The hurdle at the bottom upset The Donkey's ohuuee. Waipipi was first over Eglington's post-and-rail fence, with Orient and Gasparini on his quarters. The next brook was too much for Gasp&rini, who came a cropper, and, ifc is said, broke his thifch, Fell soon mounting again, but, owing to tho injury the horee sustained, had of course to give up. Waipipi was apparently tiring fast, and as the hurdles in the paddock was le.fi; behind Orient had a decided lead. Both Sir Maurice and Doctor commenced to move up along by the river, but made their effort too lat?, for although they easily passed Waipipi, they could not overtake old Orient, who won comfortably by half a dozen lengths from Sir Maurice, who was then lengths ahead of Doctor, Waipipi fourth.
