Glorious weather was experienced for the opening day of the Victoria Rating Club's Grand National meeting. Results :—
Maiden Hxtrdlk Raob. About two miles,— Blfle, 9.3. 1 ; Afrlcanus, 9.0, 8 ; Itlander, 9.12, 3. The other starters were :— Audacity and Bisex. 10.3; Venus, 10.1 ; Galtera, Hesperus, Blue and White, Scatterfield, Byry, 9.12 j Myra and Wild Flower, 9.10; Frijiyama"; 9.7 j and Brookhurst, 9.0. Betting : 4to 1 agat Elfie and Islander, U to 1 Byry, 6to l Africanu»andScatterfield,loto 1 others. Soafcterfleid led to the straight, when Elfie and Africa nnadrew up, and a slashing set-to resulted In a win for Blfie by half a length. Time, 4mlQ lOseo. Wybar-oid Handicap. Betting : 7to 1 agst Midas, 5 to 1 Good Hope and The Crash, and 10 to 1 the others, Midas led from start to finish, and won In a very hollow fashion by two lengths. Time, lmin 20iseo. Maiden Steeplechase About two miles.—Fearless 11, 10.7, 1 ; Freedom 11, 10.7, 2; Liberty, 10.7, 3. Other starters: Canary, Asolando, Lapwing, Audit Big Ben, Messenger, Arid, Shansen, 10.7 ; aud Waiter, 9.15. Betting : 3to lagst Fearless, 4 to 1 Asolando and Freedom, 6 to 1 to 10 to 1 the others. Canary baulked at the second hurdle, bringing down Asolando and Big Beu. Waiter fell at the next fence By this time Fearless had obtained a strong lead, and cantered In a winner by a dozen lengths. Other starters: Oorythus, 13.0; Chandler, 11\12; Tradition, 11.6; Crusoe, 11.1; Ulysse»,ll.o; Manuka, 10.4: Freedom, 10 0; The First, 9.10;- Yatapa and Pingara, 9.7 ; Poroius, 9.3; King Billy, General Gordon? Toung Horatio, 90. Betting: 6 to 1 against Plneara. 5 to 1 General Gordon, 6 to 1 Tradition, 10 to 1 Priscilla, 15 to 1 Oorythus, 25 to 1 Bllerslle. Tatapa and Donald were the first nway, and af tergoiug a short distance the latter drew clear, with General Gordon second. Donald maintained his lead passing the stand, and when half of the Journey was covered was still in front, followed oloiely by Poroius, Corythus, Freedom, Prltollla, Yatapa, General Gordon, Tradition, and BUenlfe in that order. Donald was going exceedingly well, and at the distance post looked all over a winner, but here BUerslie and Pilbcllla, drawing out from the ruck, joined Issue, and the trio rose to the last hurdle together. A desperate race ensued down the straight, BHerslie just staying home and gaining the judge's verdict by r short neck ; Prisoilla, half a length away, third. Time, 6min lOjseo. Wentbb Handicap. One mile and a-quarter.— Bliziard, 7,5. 1; Stanley, 8.6, 2; Dividend, 8.6, 3. Betting: 7to 2 agsfc Jesuit, sto 2 Gnaroo, 7 to 1 Precedent and Blizzard. Won by two lengths. Time, 2min 16jseo.
