Chess Items.
Otago v. Ohristchurch.— A telegraphic chess match has been arranged between the Otago and Ohristchurch Chess Clubs, to be played on the 20th and 27th inst., eight players a side. " Can jou tell me where the automaton chesßplayer is ? " asked a gentleman of an attendant at an exhibition. "Do ye mane the figure that plays eames by itself, an' ye can't see anybody working it?" "Yes, that's what I mean.* "• l Well, j ye'd b6tter wait a bit -he's gone out to dinner now. We regret to learn that Mr A. H. Todd, the hon. sec. of the Canterbury Chess Club, has been removed to Nelson. During the three or four years that Mr Todd has performed the duties of secretary he has made friends of all members of the club, and by these he is highly esteemed. But it is not alone as secretary that he will be missed, but as a player also. Banking, as he does, as one of the first half-dozen of the club his loss will be keenly felt when it comes to playing interprovincial matohes .— PreBB. In commenting on the games between Messrs Steinitz and Tchigorin, Mr Reichelieu, of the Philadelphia Times says:— lt must not be supposed that Tchigorin is better than Mackenzie or Blackburne. They are afraid of Steinitz and are beaten before the first move is made. " Tchi," on the other band, is as bold as brass and does not get scared when he sees PKto 83. In fact it is Steinitz who is the nervous man in these games. i Gunsberg v. Lee.— This match was concluded on Saturday, January 26, as the BritisK Chess Club. Gunsberg won The score was as follows : Guusberg, 3; Lee, 0; drawn; 2. The latest score in the Steinitz-Tchigorin match is Steinitz 6, Tchigorin 5, Mr Steinitz having won the ninth and tenth, and Mr Tchigorin the eleventh.
