New Zealand Exhibition Chess Tournament.

A meeting of the Intercolonial Chess Tournament Committee was held ab the club room of the Otago Chess Club on Saturday night, Mr C. S. Reeves in the chair. The draft of a circular inviting the co-operation of other chess clubs and chess players throughout the colonies was considered and approved. It is proposed to collect a sum of money to be awarded as prizes for the competitors in the tournament, and if the funds available should warrant it, three prizes at least will be offered for competition. A leading member of the club at once offered to start the fund by himself subscribing £5. This is a good beginning, and if the exataple is followed there will be prizes of a substantial kind to be competed for. The winner of the principal prize will be entitled to the honour of being called champion of the tournament, the committee wisely avoiding conceding the honour so frequently claimed in such competitions of " the championship of the colony or colonies." If a sufficient number of competitors of the gentler sex can be induced to enter, it is not improbable that a prize may be assigned to be competed for by ladies. Although tbe tournament will be conducted under the direction of the Otago Chess Club, the committee invite and will favourably consider suggestions from other cluba or intending competitors.
