A BIRTHDAY GREETING.

Others more capable have wreathed the name, Aud twined with it the laurel and the bay ; Wept o'er the word with itß pure heaven-born sound, Embellished it with golden words of praise. And I have listened, read each love-breathed veree, Till naught is missing for my pen to trace, — Naught ; yet, to one I know fcheae simple words In her true heart will hold a cherished place. Mother, sweet mother 1 deare3t name on earth, And cherished in the angel home of God ; — Heaven help tho aching hearts that miss thy love, And ne'er have had the peace thy love affords. My mother !— yes, to thee I send these lines To greet thy birthday, blest by Love's sweet flame; But naught that this weak pen of mine can trace Can halt imply the words my heart doth frame. To say that thou art noble, s weefc, and true, Is only echoing the bards of old ; And that thou art above them all to me Needs not, my darling mother, to be told. God bless thy birt hday, dearest mother mine, I twine it with sweet wreaths of faith and love, A garland gathered in the dim sweet land, Yet not too pure to rest thy brow above. '• God bless thy birthday," are the words, sweet one, More meet to greet thee than a world of praise ; God bless thee ever, gentle mother mine, Love thee and guide thee in his thoughts and ways. — MUTA. Otautau, August 10.
