THE LOST POEM,

Munching bread and butter, I compos'd a poem, A la Percy Sheliey— (Reader do you know him ?), 'Twas a pretty ditty, Full of dainty fancy, Such as would delight a Gentle Jane or Nancy ; Of ambrosial flavour, Kedolent of nectar (Though its scanning, maybe, Might ha c been correcter), — And my word I give you, Without stint or stutter, I compos'd it, munching Slabs of bread and butter ! It was light and tender (Not the food, the poem) ; Could I find these lines, I'd Gladly to yon show 'em ; But I think I scrawled 'em On the kitchen table, And to find their traces Now am quite unable (Fact; is, I was hungry. And those lines to utter Fail'd - because my mouth was Full of bread and butter !). Washing up the dishea, I washed out my ditty ; So the world has lost ifc,— Isn't it a pity ? — Wyoh Elm. Moeraki, August 10.
