FORTROSE.

June 6. — A soiree, concert, and ball came off here on the 3rd' ins t. The Rev. Mr Hobbs, whooccupied the chair, intimated the proceeds would be devoted to the fund for the erection of a shelter shed for. the school. Miss Z. Y. Clarke presided at the piano, and an excellent programme was satisfactorily gone through. The somewhat novel programme included a Chinese song by a Celestial, a Maori song by Captian Joss, in addition to English, Scotch, and Irish songs. Votes of thanks and the singing of the National Anthem brought the entertainment to a close at midnight. About £10 will be netted for' the' shed fund. After the chairman had left, the room was cleared for dancing, which was kept up with great spirit and enjoyment until daydawn. The music was supplied by Mrs W. Davis (piano) and Mr James Shirley (violin), Mr James Preston acting as M.C. Shipping.— The cutter Lizzie was pulled out over the bar on Sunday at high water, the sea being calm and there being no wind. I suppose we shall be compelled to fall back on small sailing craft to furnish our supplies, as we can • hardly expect valuable steamboats to venture entering unassisted by a signalman.

Licensing. — The annual licensing meeting was held in the schoolhouse here on Saturday last, when Messrs Elliot, Shirley, and M'Donald's Fortrose licenses were renewed, and Mr Morgan's accommodation license, Waikawa, renewed ; also Mr Miller's Pine Bush Hotel.

Agriculture. — Threshing ia progressing slowly, and will not be finished for a month or six weeks.
