AQUATICS.

The victory of Victoria over New South Wales on the Parramatta river on Saturday last, was specially pleasing to ua on account of the betting market showing the cornstalks to be

the favourites. , The time was something marvellous, and I suppose I, must mentally put myself on the back for so persistently adhering to fcba Victorians to score a win.

Last Saturday the rowing authorities who are •wont to foregather on the banks of the Yarra and select winners by 'their "style" sustained a sad reverse, their calculations being completely upset by the result of the eight-oared race between Ormond and Trinity Colleges. The contest has been and annual one since 1881, the Ormond never previously having tasted the sweets of victory. Of course, that in itself was a pretty good line to go upon, and "the knowing ones " took full andvantage thereof, and offered mild commiserations to the Ocmond boys, in anticipation of the terrible doing they were going to receive. "Visor," in the Australasian, actually went so far as to state that Mr Robson, a master who acted as coach, had taught them a style which could only be described as the how-to-go-slow. But results proved that the Ormond couldn't row slow enough to let Trinity have a look in at any portion of the journey between Humbug Reach and the Gaswork on the Lower Yarra. The following weights will show the calibre of some of the " boys " who competed : —
