LAWRENCE.
May 28. — The jubilee concert held to celebrate the opening of the Volunteer Hall was one of the most saccessful ever held in the district. Mr Woods and Mr Fraer had the management of the affair, and this
was a sufficient guarantee to draw an en thusiastie audience from their comfortable quarters at the fireside on a most unpromising night. The, warlike decorations of the hall and the uniforms of the volunteers and cadets gave somethingof a military appearance to the scene, and Captain Edie is to be congratulated on his ' having brought the undertaking to a successful jssue. The instrumentalists — Mrs Woods, Miss Mabel, Rolf e, Messrs Woods and Graham, and Master R. Stenhouse— were all that could be desired, and Mrs Woods is entitled to special praise for her excellent performance, not only in the overtures, but also in her accompaniment of the several vocalists; of these Miss Lily Mason, did admirably, and Mrs M'Farlane and Miss M'Nicol sang with great expression. Messrs Woods, Braik, and Foster pleased the audience in all they attempted, judging by the applause which followed each of the pieces in which they took part. Master Robert Stenhouse in his heat uniform sang " The harp that once through Tara's Hall " in very good style. The farce " The Secret" was exceedingly well played, and it is a difficult matter to individualise. Mr Fraer as Thomas was excellent, and Mr E. Rolfe as Duping and Mr E. P. Campbell as Valaxe, each did well. Master C. Fraer as the porter provoked roars of laughter ; while Misses Kelleher and M. Arthur as Cecile and Angelina played . exceedingly well., At the interval Captain Edie thanked all those who had taken part in the entertainment, and presented the cup given by Colour-sergeant Neill to Corporal Spiers, now of Dunedin.
