Thle SPORTSMAN . CHALLENGE CUP.
June 20th.
The above race was won, as we learned by cable, by John Largan defeating the Australian scullers, H. Pearce and E. C. Laycock. The wesjtherfortherace was good, buttheattendance was small. Largan, since his defeat of Pearce last Friday, had been somewhat unwell, and Laycock was made a strong favourite, 2 to 1 behg bet on him, and 2 to 1 agst Largan. The re was no .betting on Pearce, who had the Mic.dlesex station. Largan, who had the Sur ?ey station, had the best of the start. At Hammersmith Bridge, one mile and threequapters from the start, he was half a length ahead. Pearce and Laycock were leve\ All were then going well. Largan won the race by two! lengths from Pearce. Laycock stopped opposite the Thornycroft "Works at Chiswick. The result of the race caused much surprise, and open accusations were' made of collusion. The| Sportsman says the prevailing impression is that Laycock did his utmost to retard Largan[ in order to enable Pearce to win.
