ATHLETICS.
June 3rd will probably long remain memorable for the two amateur bests on record at a mile accomplished on that afternoon, W. G. George, at Lillie Bridge, running a mile in 4 mini 19 2-5 sec, beating his own previous record of August 16th 1880, by no less than 3 3-5 seel an ,d H. L. Cortis, on the Crystal Palace traok, riding a mile on a bicycle in 2 mm. 43 1-5 sec | beating easily both the amateur and professional record.
On June 9th the annual games of the Manhattan Athletic Club were held, when the announcement that Mr L. E. Myers and Mr Harry Fredericks would attempt to lower the records in the 400 and f -mile runs respectively wasi sufficient attraction, aside from the many events on the programme, to assure a large gathering and an interesting afternoon's sport. Few doubted the ability of either of the athletes mentioned to succeed in their respective'undertakings, and when Mr Myers crossed the line in the 400 in 43£ sec, & of a second faster than his previous best— 43f— made October 22nd, 1881, and his club mate beat time by running the f in 3 mm. 16 4-5 sec, which lowers the best previous record of 3 mm. IS.j sec, a cheer from the crowd greeted the successful athletes. Mr Myers in his event ran 130 yards in 13 J sec. and the 250 in 26 sec, which is i of a second faster than his own previous best.
