Local Industries.

A new malt-house and kiln is in course of erection at Grantsvale, Glendermid, for Messrs Donald Grant and Co. The malthouse is 104 feet in length by 33 feet in width, and is built of wood. The floor is raised some distance above the ground to place it on a level with the upper floor of the kiln, and is supported by a very strong wooden framework, over which is laid a bed of concrete 4£ inches in thickness, and finished in cement. At the north end of the malt-room is a large steep, and adjoining it a barley-store will be erected, the dimensions of which will be 36 feet x 33 feet. The kiln is at the south end of the malt-house, and is 40 feet in height. There are two furnaces on the ground floor, and the upper floor is laid with perforated sheets of iron on which to dry the malt. ( In conjunction with the kiln, a two-atorey malt-store, 34 feet in length by 25 feet in breadth, has yet to be erected. Every convenience in the matter of saving labour has been provided, the floors of the barley-store, malt-house, kiln, and maltstore being on a' uniform tevelj so that by means of a small tramway running from one end of the building to the other, all difficulty of carriage is dispensed with. A good supply of water has been laid on from the adjacent hills, and although the whole of the buildings will not be completed for a month or so, they are sufficiently advanced to allow of operations being commenced about the beginning of next week.
