Portobello Presbyterian Church.

The annual soiree of the Presbyterian Church was held on the evening of the Bth inst. in the church. Tea was placed on the tables at half, past 7 o'clock. After all had partaken of the good tilings provided, The Rev. A. Greig took the chair and gave an address, detailing the state and condition of the church throughout the district, in regard both to its temporal and spiritual advancement.

He then called upon the treasurer (Mr Young) to read the financial report for tho year, which showed the following amounts had been raised in the Portobello proper portion of the charge for the year 1881 :— Suatentation fund . . . . • • £59 4 0 Aged and infirm ministers' fund .. 10 0 Missions .. •• •• •• 412 6 Dayspring •• •• " SJS s Church extension . . • • . . 18 7 Ministers' passages . . • • . . 118 3 Ordinary collections .. •• .. 22 4 5 Seat rents.. .. •• .. 13 6 6 The TitEASUREii stated that they had been able to give their minister a small supplement, and he hoped that the congregation would increase their efforts to make the charge self-supporting. At present they were receiving over £30 from other congregations for the support of their minister, a state of things which was not creditable to the people of Portobello ; and he hoped that by tho end of thin year that raprowh would bo removed. The ftevs. J. Kimkland and R. R. MSutherland then addressed the people pre"

sent, and their remarks were listened to With evident pleasure. The Rev. J. Ryley and Mr J. A. Torrance had been asked to attend, but were unable to do so. Miss Kirkland presided at the harmonium, and a band of youthful choristers gave a number of vocal selections throughout the evening. The church wag tastefully decorated by the young ladies of the congregation, and was filled to overflowing. The usual votes of thanks were carried by acclamation to all and sundry who had assisted in the management of the soiree, which was a great success, as a considerable number attended from the Maori Kaik, Broad Bay, and Sandymount.
