OTAGO ROWING AND SAILING ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of; those desirous of- forming a Boating Association was held on Wednesday in the Criterion Hotel. , Mr L. O. Beal was in. the chair, and there was a large attendance of those who take an interest in aquatic sports. The Chaiemajst briefly explained the object of the meeting, and proceeded; to say that, the Committee in collecting subscriptions, during the present. year_ were desirous of keeping a nucleus in .hand in the sha^e of money or cups for the purpose of providing prizes for, next year's regatta. -The cup given by the New r Zealand Shipping Company, would have jto'be wpn three times ; but if they could" collect 'enough' money they could, buy;a 'cup which would, be equivalent, to that referred , toj and afterwards they might provide, other, prizes for'such'"contests aa might be agreed; upon. It seemed to him to foe a pity that the,, success of these regattas should be endangered in consequence of the whole of the funds of the previous regatta being distributed. , They had now, three special priaes, namely the -New .Zealand' Shipping Companyfs. cap,, also $iat ', given' by ,Mr Baxter, and the Walter'eprize, and he hoped that they would succeed in getting others Tako. , r He suggested that these matches should be j limited to the, competition, for challenge ,' prizes, but , if other/boating men. wished ta "take. pjirt'iii the regatta, the Association would.be glad at; seeing the regatta , increase^ but, the v rrapdnaibiiiijr of (»)UeclangLsho^dr^t^th]thlsse^Ho.wishtdtb >,Mr, Folleb ; thought, that, it ; would. bo well for the Association to confine" itself ' to rowing alone. .„r , ;,:/- ;> -' t i'_.
