FIRES.

Two fires occurred in Dunedin on Tuesday! The first was reported at the Central Engine Station shortly after nine o'clock in the morning. This one proved to be at the Waverly Boarding house in Moray place. The fire was discovered before it had gained much headway, and was promptly extinguished by the inmates of the house. ' The other instance was that of a four-roomed house, situated between Frederick and Albany streets, and T owned by an expressman named Johnston. > The, building- waa completely gutted, only a portion of the furniture being saved. The tire is supposed to have resulted from a foul chimney. The fire bell rang at about twenty minutes past two this morning— this time tho fire was again at .M^usky's Waverley House. The fire is supposed, a lodger informs us, to have commenced.. in. the tirat floor, and it spread with such rapidity that the numerous inmates barely escaped with their lives, some having to jump from the upper windows. The house, an old two-stored wooden one, blazed fiercely and., was soon burnt to, the ground. Mr Dodd'a private residence' was stripped of the furniture; but tho Brigade by great efforts preserved the house. The Waverley building was insured for £200.; the furniture was uninsured. The origin of the fire is not known. The flames illuminated the whole neighbourhood. ,' The supply of water was very short.
