CONTRACTS FOR THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT. HARBOUR STEAMER FOR OTAGO. rpHE Provincial Government are prepared J- to receive Tenders sent to this Office before 27th October, 1857, from parties willing to run a Steamer on the Harbour of Otago. The Steamer to be of about 30-horse power, and proportionate tonnage ; not to exceed 4 feet draught of water, and to run between Dunedin and Port Chalmers on at least two days of each week. The sources of income to such a Steamer would be the carrying of goods and passengers to and from Port Chalmers, towing of vessels and lighters, loading and discharging Immigrant ships, and occasional trips on the Coast. For the information of parties desirous of entering into this contract, it may be mentioned that the number of sea-going vessels entered inwards at the Custom House of Dunedin for the year ending March 1857, was 36 ; the tonnage of goods inwards about 3000, and outwards 2000 for the same period, particulars of which may be seen at the Superintendent's Office. The shores of the harbour are plentifully supplied with firewood, and coal has been found in the Province, but not yet worked to any extent. Contractors would therefore require to depend on importing coal, or burning wood in the meantime. The distance from Port Chalmers to Dunedin is nine, and from Port Chalmers to the Heads about six miles. Parties willing to contract for the above service are requested to state in their Tender the lowest amount of bonus for which they would undertake the above service, and the minimum number of years over which the contract is to extend. By his Honor's command JOHN LOGAN, Clerk to Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, Dunedin, 30th May, 1857. '
