J. C. CARNEGIE. Dunedin, ! 3th June 1857. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CENTRAL DISTRICT. f^\ ENTLEMEN, — In compliance with the VX expressed wishes of not a few of your number, I have been induced to offer myself as a candidate for the honour of representing you in the Provincial Council, in room of Mr. Lee, resigned. As a resident in the district, having a considerable interest in its prosperity, as well as in the progress of the colony generally — an independent elector holding liberal views — I solicit your support. As to the land question, I am of opinion the Regulations of the Province ought to be equalized. There is also room for considerable amendments on the Education Ordinance, and limitations of the Ferries Ordinance. With due regard to efficiency in the public service, the largest possible amount both from revenue and loan ought to be annually devoted to Roads and Immigration. Immediate steps should also be taken to equalize our representation, in order that justice may be done to the important and promising Southern portion of the Province. If returned, I shall use my best endeavours to promote these objects, and will gladly entertain any measures which may have the effect of establishing Steam Communication betwixt this, the other Provinces, and Australia ; or facilitating at a reasonable expense our own internal intercourse. As I shall at the Hustings more fully explain my views, and answer any enquiries which may be made, it seems unnecessary for me at present further to enter into details. Besides, I shall take, in conjunction with my Committee undernamed, an opportunity of calling upon you personally as far as I possibly can. I have the honour to be, Gentlemen, Your obedient Servant, WILLIAM STEVENSON. East Taieri, 12th June, 1857. The following gentlemen have agreed to act as a Committee for ensuring Mr. Stevenson's election : — Messrs. Andrew Todd John Allan, Senr. Roeeet Stevenson Thomas Culling Robert Dowie N. J. B. M'Gregor David W. Oughton James Cullen Alex. Rei^nib John Allan, Jvmr.
