OPUNAKE CRICKET
OPUNAKE v. ELTHAM (By “Critic”) From the point of view of excitement, game was perhaps the most enjoyable that Opunake has played this season. With Jackson, Dormer, Rose and J. Snell all back in the pavilion with the the score at seven, and a worried look on the skipper’s face, the real players in the team decided to get the position in hand again. George Snell the team’s captain played a fine innings by holding up one end while Sorenson proceeded with his forceful hitting to knock the bowling off its length. When Sorenson went in, Johnson, the Eltham spin bowler had charge, but the Eltham skipper made a mistake in taking him off too soon. Runs began to come quickly and with the arrival of K. Somervell, the ex-Poverty Bay rep., the spectators were shown how to use the pull shot and the cover.drive. His was a fine innings. However, the innings played by Brian Des Forges was equally valuable and contributed largely to Opunake’s recovery, as he kept one end going while Somervell scored freely at the other. This is a batsman whom we are to hear more of. Then to close the innings came that valuable and forceful knock by Stan Davey whose contempt for the bowling must have reminded some of the older spectators of Tate or Larwood at ninth wicket. He even used the professional touch of sending in for another bat. When Eltham went to the wicket there was a grim look about Sorenson who bowled excellently but with little luck. Dormer had a wicked look on his face, the reason for which was to be found later in 'the game for he and the captain had been discovered grinning under George’s straw hat. The long “Slim” bowler also bowled well and at times short leg thought he could hear his fingers clicking. The fielding, taking it all round was good. The team might sav that it has tasted of Kent cricket.
