TOURNAMENT PLAYERS CLUB ACTIVITIES Several members of the Opunake Club are’ taking part in the New Plymouth Hardcourt tournament which commences tomorrow. The club championships are nearing the finals, the men’s singles having been completed, C. Thomas emerging the winner after a good game with H. Otene. Players for New Plymouth are: Mrs. Otene, Mrs. Jackson, H. Otene, J. Roach, R. Riley. Miss E. Roach and Mr. R. D. MacLean are also taking part in the tournament. Club Championships An unusually large gallery of spectators watched the Senior men’s final, which went to three sets. Thomas and Otene played excellent tennis although the former made more mistakes early. Otene held a 5-4 lead and 40 love in the next game of the first set but failed to clinch it and again in the final set he led 5-4 and 30 love on his own service, but Thomas recovered well and played right on form to win 3 games in a row and the match. The scores were: Thomas beat Otene 6-4. 3-6, 7-5. This is Thomas’ last game for the championship- He left on Tuesday for a short holiday at Wellington before taking up a position at New Plymouth. South Taranaki Ladder Matoh Mrs. L. Jackson successfully challenged Miss M. Thomas for the South Taranaki ladder on Tuesday, winning 11-9, 4-6, 6-4.
