OPUNAKE R.S.A.
EXECUTIVE MEETING EMPLOYMENT CORPS. Mr, C. Harding, chairman, presided at the monthly meeting of the R.S.A. executive held on Tuesday. Apologies were received from Messrs. Y. McGregor, J. Stronge and G. Riordon. A report, outlining the discussions on war memorials at the recent meeting of district representatives was read and received. The secretary was instructed to write thanking the County Clerk, Mr. C. Erechtling for his work in arranging the above meeting. Mr. R. S. Martin reported on the new scheme for the Opunake Servicemen’s Cemeteyy, plans of which were now available at the Borough Council. It now remained for the P.W.D. to complete the work and the was instructed to write to the resident District Engineer asking that the matter be treated as urgent. The five plaques have been ordered for existing graves. Members expressed appreciation of the excellent success of the recent street mart and the secretary was asked to write to the Women’s Auxiliary ( and all who had assisted, thanking them on behalf of the association. . The secretary was also instructed to write to the two citizens of Smethwick who wrote to the Association.
The “Food for Smethwick” sub committee’s report was adopted. The effort for October was considered very good. A meeting of members of the executive, social committee and Women’s Auxiliary was arranged~Tor next Tuesday at the Drill Hall, where details in connection with the Annual Ball to be held on November 10th., would be attended to. Mr. R. R. Brown briefly reported on the delegates meeting held at Eltham on 30th September and Mr. Martin also gave a verbal report of the recent visit of members of the Lands Settle ment Board. Emergency Employment Corps. A circular from Headquarters suggesting the formation of Emergency Employment Corps., in each town of any size, the basic idea being to utilise the leisure hours of individual citizens (exservicemen or otherwise) in order to assist—even in the smallest way—the drive for greater production and to facilitate its transport, provoked a short discussion, and it was finally decided to insert an advertisement in the local n per requesting all interested to get in touch with the secretary or chairman. The scheme outlined, provided for payment for services at the current award rates. The members did not favour the change of name from Anzac Day to National Commemoration Day and the secretary was instructed to advise Headquarters accordingly. Mr. J. S. Stronge was appointed convenor of the Opunake District R.S.A. Farm Advisory Committee. Accounts totalling £2O-18-11 were passed for payment. The .secretary was instructed to write to the P. and T. Department, Wellington, supporting two applications of members for a telephone service.
