COUNTY AFFAIRS

MONTHLY MEETING GENERAL BUSINESS The ordinary meeting of the Egmont 'County Council was held in the County Chambers on Tuesday, the Chairman, Mr. W. C. Green presiding. Present: C'rs. A. J. Lilley, R. H. Baylis, G. D. Dawson, L. A. Young, E. A! Collins, R. Gassie and G. Sayed, the County Clerk Mr. C. Erechtling and County Engineer, Mr. R. S. Martin. An apology was received from Cr. W. A. Sheat, M.P.

It was reported that local bodies had agreed to continue under the existing arrangements as a result of the recent meeting held at Hawera to consider Health Inspector’s salaries and fees. The Opunake District R.S.A. wrote advising that district representatives at a recent conference held to discuss War Memorials had expressed the desire to proceed with separate memorials in each of their respective districts. —Received. The Chairman was appointed to attend a meeting of the Taranaki Local Bodies Association to be held at Eltham on October 30th. The tender of Disabled Servicemens’ Products for the supply of Dog collars for 1948 was accepted. - Mr, G. H. Halford, Pihama, wrote requesting permission to erect a shelter at the Railway Crossing on Patiki Road for children waiting for the school bus.—No objection was raised provided it was erected to the satisfaction of the Engineer. Factory Right-Of-Way

The secretary of. the Warea Dairy Co., wrote advising that the company was still considering the question of the dedication of the right-of-way to the Company’s factory, and asking for an estimate of the cost _of placing the road in a condition which would be acceptable to the County Council in the event of it being taken over. A short discussion followed and it was left to the Engineer to discuss the question fully with the Company’s directors. The Chairman also agreed to take part in the discussion and it was recommended that an estimate for the cost of a 12 foot sealed road with the corner widened, should be considered by the Company. The Engineer was given authority to attend the conference of the N.Z. Institute of Engineers to be held at Dunedin in February, 1948. Govett, Quilliam and Hutchen applied for a partition of Taihaere 1. Block 2. The Chief Surveyor, Mr. J. S. Strawbridge, also sought approval for sub-division of part section 47, ’Block IX, Cape Sub-division.—Both approved.

The Minutes of the N.Z. Comities Association were read and received. The Clerk was instructed to notify the , Pungarehu Domain Hoard that the Council would undertake the cost of the entrance improvement work completed. The Health Officer, Mr. J. W. Brimblecombe. reported as follows: Habitations inspected 6, notices served 1; Plumbing: and Drainage 7; Food premises 1. No cases of infectious diseases were reported.

The Opunake Borough Council wrote advising the construction of a boulder groyne at the Waiaua Diver to combat erosion was under consideration and the County was asked to share the cost involved, estimated at £40 — The Works committee agreed to make an inspection before next meeting. The County Inspector reported that only 3 horses were impounded last month. Crs. Dawson and Baylis reported on the meeting with the Lands Settlement Board held on Monday. It was decided to confine County polling booths (in the Local Bodies Elections in November) to the main roads, booths to be at Puniho Store, Warea, Pungarehu, Opunake, Bahotu, Te Kiri, Pihama, Awatuna and Oaonui. The full report covering life number of Dairy cows driven on County roads bv dairy farmers in the district was submitted to the Council.—Held over for discussion at the next meeting. Accounts totalling £3,593-5-7 were passed for payment.
