FIRST ANNUAL DINNER

OAONUI-OPUNAKE Y.F.C. EXCELLENT PROGRESS To celebrate the first “Birthday” of the Oaonui-Opunake Y:F.C., members and guests from neighbouring Clubs assembled at the Beach Pavilion on Tuesday evening, when the first Annual Dinner was enjoyed. Unfortunately, owing to a last minute breakdown, Messrs. E. M, Bates, Department of Agriculture Instructor, Hawera and M. Murphy, Chairman of the South Taranaki Y.F. Committee, were unable to attend. The excellent progress of the Club in its first year, was commented upon by several speakers, and members were heartily congratulated on the fine spirit existing among members. Tlie Chairman, Mr, P. Walsh, in outlining the activities of the Club during the year, stated that the occasion was a great event and members were proud of their achievements “ '*V VMr. H. Y. White endorsed the Chairman’s remarks. He emphasised the value of the movement in training and broadening the outlook of young men, and in providing a solid foundation for their participation in public and district activities in later life. Mr. White also appealed for support for the Young Farmers’ Way Memorial project—a wing at Lincoln and Massey College in honour of members who fell in the recent war. The target was £30,000, and while appearing large actually represented the equivalent of £2 per member. Mr. P. Daly paid a tribute to the Department of Agriculture, whose officers had sponsored the Y.F. Movement and especially thanked Mr. White for hiis invaluable work in the interests of the local club. After an excellent dinner had been served by Mrs. Cargo a full toast list was honoured as follows (Mr. J. Roach acted as Toastmaster) : The King; Oaonui-Opunake Y.F.C., Mr. I. Gopperth—Mr. P. Walsh; Neighbouring Clubs, Mr. J. Hickey Mr. T. Julian; Young Farmers Club Organisation, Mr. H. Y. White—P. Daly; Press, M. Hickey—G. Jackson; Absent Friends, Mr. A. Brennan; The Host and Hostess, Mr. J, Roach —Mr. A. Cargo ; The Toastmaster, Mr. P. Walsh—Mr. J. Roach.
