HOME GUARD SOCIAL

FUNCTION AT DRILL HALL An enjoyable time was spent by a good muster of Home guardsmen at a Smoke Concert and Social which was held in the Drill Hall on Tuesday evening. The area, commander, Major Bathgate presided at the function.

Apologies for absence were received from Lieutenant-Colonel Smart, area 8A Headquarters Staff and Mr. R. Croke Superintendent of Opunake Division St. John Ambulance.

Following the Loyal Toast the following Toast List was honoilred: The Fighting Forces, proposed bv Mr. N. Reardon, reply Mr. ' Sheppard; Opunake Home Guard. The Mayor, Mr. G. C. Ckmston —Unit-Command-er L. >l. Sharrock; Area Headquarters, Major Bathgate Captain N. C. Boiflrn; Visitors. Mr. Sharrock—Mr. G. C. Ciouston; Absent Comrades, Mr. E. G. Snell—Mr. G. Feaver; Social Committee, Mr. A. D. L. McLean—Mr. N. Reardon. During the evening an interestin address on the future activities of the Home Guatd, now under military control, was given bv Captain N. C. Bourn, area 8A Headquarters Staff. Lieutentant Comerford of Headquarters Staff also addressed the gathering. Items were rendered by Mr. C."M. Bathgate and -I. Whittaker.

Mr. W. I)- Richards acted as pianist for the evening and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
