LOCAL AND GENERAL

Bowls at New Plymouth.— Two local rinks took part in the centre tourney this week and gave a good account of themselves. C. A. .Smith's rink secured four wins and J. Moron's rink tliree wins. Butter Prices Rise.— It is pleasing to read that at long last the produce market has started to rise a little. Four shillings upward makes good reading after such a long wait for something to turn uj£ Forthcoming Races.— Hawera and New Plymouth will be holding race meetings during the next few weeks. Quite a number of classy horses hare been nominated, many of which will be seen at the Opunake fixture in March. Defective Mirrors.— The important part in which a defective mirror can play in a motor collision was shown in & case recently held at .Eltham in which a local resident was involved. It is quite common to see a car with the mirror fastened in a position which would be considered almost useless if :i proper view of approaching traffic was required. It is also ..a good practice to examine the glass to see if the, mercurial paint is in order.

Another Excursion. — On Sunday week an excursion train will convey a crowd of visitors from Hawera to the Opunake beach. A number of Park bowlers intend making the trip and the local club will arrange a oneday tourney on this occasion. Full of Action.— The film to be screened at the New Theatre to-night and tomorrow is not the usual type of Western film. It contains some wonderful scenery and the acting and photography is up to the high standard one would expect from a work of Zane Grey. Large Shag Shot.— A shag, one of the many, secured with a rifle at a Tarauaki beach resort recently was found to have an eight-inch herring w its beak and another larger fish in its stomach. No wonder tha fishermen at this resort couldn't get a bite. Great Demand. — ! Second-hand cars are always in great demaud at Xmas time, said a witness in a motor collision case at Eltham on Tuesday. Quite a ■ number of people buy up a cheap car —have a "good" tour round • and later on sell it for anything they can get for it. Thrilling Serial. — Another chapter of "The Lost Special" will be screened at thft . New Theatre this week. The story is one of the railroad and each week the plot thickens, but is so arranged that the threads can be picked ui> at once even if the preceding chapters have not been seen.

Trying Their Luok. — In consequence of our "fish story" of the 191 b. schnapper which was caught at the Opunake wharf recently, quite a number of amateur fishermen intend trying out the spot. One local youth secured 10 good sized fish in a few days, the smallest being 61b in weight. Services Appreciated.—

An Eltham resident stated that the home going excursionists on Sunday last were loud in their praises of the excellent treatment meted out at the beach. He felt sure it would be a simple matter to arrange a further trip before the Easter holidays, when good support would be assured.

Kept His Wool On.— An Eltham sheep farmer, who was present at the cricket ball, remarked that quite a cheerful atmosphere pervaded his part of the district. After holding on to the wool for four years and selling during the last month has more than repaid them for the lean times experienced.
