BOWLING

CLUB COMPETITIONS NOTES AND COMMENTS The reputation that the month of January bears in Taranaki for being one of, if not the warmest, months in the calendar is being badly shattered. The weather clerks had a strenuous enough time at Christmas, chopping and changing from sunshine to rain, and on higher levels to snow, but theirs is a hard taskmaster, and this week again they are apparently working at full pressure to provide as many extreme vagaries as possible. Consequently there has been little activity on the local green and the club competitions are behind time. Quite a number of players have not yet ta»ken part in a single club competition. A better time could not be chosen than right now for it will serve as great practice for the Lambie Shield tourney which will be held in about two weeks' time.

One occasionally sees in the game of bowls a bowl played with wrong bias, and generally it is the beginner that makes this mistake, but not always. Even players who have reached tournament standard, as was demonstrated on the New Plymouth green on Tuesday afternoon, when three or four bowls were dispatched on wrong bias.

All the Hawera .skips at Kapon-g-a on Saturday—Bull, Winks, Cropton and Foy—won their rink games and by a coincidence each Kaponga rink scored exactly 19 points, Cran losing- to Bull 19—24, Tyack to Winks 19—35, Dawson to Cropton 19—24 and Fallows to Foy 19—25. The visitin# shield team was accompanied Jby non-competition and colt rinks and the day proved most enjoyable for all who participated. There is every prospect of record entries for this year's Lam* bie Shield competition. Kaponga Avill be strongly represented, the main reason being the decision of the committee to use the Kaponga green this year. The senior championship will be decided any day now and -should prove to be a real good game. Both It. Smith and -T. Morris have shown excellent form this year although neither of them have played many games. A letter has been received from the Cambrige Bowling Club inviting members of the Opuuake Club to the annual Easter tournament. During the last two years the local club has been well represented there and the treatment meted out has been great. One rink is going up for certain and possibly two, while the Pihama Club may again visit this popular place with a rink composed of .Maoris. They would get a wonderful reception. Tyack and Tait, of Kaponga are to play in the pairs.
