Reply to a Petition.

The following letter has been received by Mr S. Prosser in reply to a petition with reference to throwing open certain land:

Public Trust Office, Wellington, 10th June, 1895. Mr Samuel Prosser, Farmer, Taungatara, and others.

Gentlemen, —I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your petition, undated, in which you ask to have certain lands thrown open for selection, and particularly Sections. 15 and 85, Block 18, Opunake, and Section 5, Mataikahawai. In reply I have to inform you that in Block 13 there is no such section as 85, and Section 15 is freehold European land, but if Block 12 is meant, I may state that it is my intention to shortly throw these sections open for selection on short term tenancies, as well as that portion of Section 5, Mataikahawai, not required for the native owners' use.

For your information I beg to point out that I have now under preparation, .and expect to have advertised in the course of a few days, a list of lands iu the Opunake, Waitara, Hawera, Mimi, Cape, Wairoa, Waimate, and Ngaire Survey Districts, comprising 16,0C3 acres, to be thrown open for selection by public competition, due notice of which will be given in the local newspapers having the "widest circulation in your district.—l am, &c, J. K. Wabbtjbton, Public Trustee.
