A very successful concert was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday, by the Mutual Improvement Society, in aid of the Library Fund. The following items were rendered with good effect, and encores were the order of the evening: Mrs M'Ewan, song, "Coming thro' the rye"; Mr Coxhead, recitation, " Sockery setting a hen" ; Mr Wilkie, song, " Home, boys, home " ; Misses Christie, duet, •' Angry words " ; Mr Christie, reading, " The first to grumble " ; Miss Stoddart, song, •' Afton Water " ; Mr Herbert, song, " Bay of Biscay " ; Mr Hills, recitation, " Virginia " ; Mr M'Clean, song, " Jock of Hazeldeen " ; Mrs M'Ewan, song, "Ah I he kissed me"; Mr Hemingway, recitation, " A terrible deed" ; Mr Wilson, song, " The Poacher " ; Mr Astbury, reading, " Writing Poetry" ; Mr Sexton, long, •' The stone outside Dan Murphy's door " ; Masters Bulmer, dialogue, "The Interviewer"; Miss Christie, reading, " Henrietta's birthday party " ; Master A. Bulmer, reading, " How we cured Pa." Mr Astbury was chairman, and on behalf of the Society moved a hearty vote of thanks to all who had assisted. Miss Holland presided at the piano during the evening. The Assembly commenced on Tuesday, and it is expected to be a great success.
The debate for next Wednesday's meeting of the M. I. Society is " Will the Cheap Money Scheie be beneficial to the working man ?"
