Taranaki County Council.

A special meeting of the Council was held on Saturday. Present Messrs Bewley (chairman), Peters, McGKjn, Adlam, McCullum, and Connett. x SPECIAL ORDER. A special order striking a rate in connection with the Eltham Road Loan of £2OOO was, on the motion of Mr Peters seconded by Mr Connett, confirmed. DOG TAX. The question of appointing a registrar and collectors of dog tax was discussed. Mr Connett moved, seconded by Mr McCullum—That the police be appointed on the same terms as last year. Mr Peters moved, as an amendment —That applications be called from persons willing to collect the dog tax, such application to state the prifje per dog at which the tax will be collected. Mr McGloin approved of appointing private collectors, and would second the amendment if separate collectors were appointed for each riding. The chairman considered it a pity to make an alteration for this year, as the police had made a good return. Mr Adlam agreed with the chairman’s remarks, but stated that the register must be kept at the County office, and to meet the requirements the clerk of the County should be the registrar of dogs. n After further discussion both resolution and amendment Were withdrawn, it beingMecided that the appointment of collectors be deferred uutil the next ordinary meeting of the Council, the chairman in the meantime to interview the police on the subject. Moved by Mr Peters, seconded by Mr Adlam—That the clerk of the County be appointed registrar of dogs in accordance with the Act. SLAUGHTER LICENSE. The Inspector’s report being favorable, the transfer cf the slaughter license from Mr Putt to Messrs George Bros, of Omata, was granted. WAiwAKAIHO BRIDGE. The plans and specifications for r new pier at the Waiwakaiho bridge were presented by Mr R. H. Davies (Engineer). Resolved—That the plans and specifications he accepted by the Council, and that tenders be called for the work, such tenders to be in by the next meeting of the Council. ELTHAM ROAD LOAN EXPENDITURE. Mr A. O’Brien (Engineer) waited on the Council with plans and specifications for bridges on the Eltham Eoad. It was decided to accept the plans and specifications, subject to the latter being amended so as to allow a further two weeks for completion of the work. Mr McGloin moved as an amendment that the plans of the Mangahume bridge be referred back to the Engineer, as he would like to see a new bridge erected there. A portion left of the old ones could be used for one of the sua v er ones—seconded by Mr Adlam pro ,'orma. After disj ssion, the amendment was withdrawn. Resolved—That tenders be called for the bridges and road-work, and that in addition to the New Plymouth papers the same be advertised in the Hawera Star and Opunake paper. SPECIFICATION CLAUSE. Moved by Mr McGloin, and seconded by Mr Adlam—That the following clause be inserted in the specifications calling for tenders : That the work be completed tq the satisfaction of the Engineer or any other person appointed by the Council.
